The Golden Apples: From Myth to Modern Use
Oranges are a remarkable fruit with a multifaceted value. Did you know that half of an orange’s weight made up of its pulp and peels, including the membrane and seeds? Only 30% of the fruit is use for production. However, the so-called “waste” from oranges is far from useless. It serves as animal feed, and bio-refineries use the remaining parts. These bioactive compounds, polymers, and enzymes are crucial in pharmaceutical applications.
The Golden Apples, known as Portokáli in Greek, have long been associated with the gods. This revered fruit, originating in Malaysia, made its journey to the Americas with Christopher Columbus. The first planting occurred in Santo Domingo, presently known as the Dominican Republic. The Villa of Santo Domingo was set up between 1496 and 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus, who was the brother of the Admiral. The Taino population, the original settlers of the island, called it Bohio. Other historical names for the island include Babeque, Quisqueya, and Haiti (Ayti).
Beyond the valuable “waste” from orange peels, another byproduct has appeared: d-limonene, a colorless liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon. This compound is present in various other citrus fruits and serves multiple purposes.
D-Limonene Facts:
Cleaning Power: It is a common ingredient in both solvent and water-based cleaners because of their great degreasing properties.
Fresh Scent: d-Limonene adds a pleasant citrus smell to cleaning products.
D-Limonene is a powerful degreaser that takes advantage of the orange oil, it is earth friendly and very effective. Depending on the use and dilution, it can be an exceptionally excellent choice for industrial and housing applications.
